Why Core Strength Is Important

“Engage your core muscles!” This may be a sentence you have heard a time or fifteen if you have ever worked with a fitness instructor or taken a group fitness class. But what is the BIG deal about your core and where even is it? Your core muscles are the muscles that surround your trunk and pelvis. A strong core is an important part of a well-rounded fitness program. Aside from doing the usual sit-ups or push-ups, core muscles can often be neglected in a workout routine. However, you will reap big rewards if you get those core muscles in shape, keep reading to find out why!

Improve Balance and Stability
By doing core exercises, it teaches your pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen to work in sync. By having these areas of your body work together, it will lead to better stability whether it be during sports or in daily activities. In all actuality, most sports or physical activities depend on stable core muscles.

No Special Equipment Needed
If an exercise uses your abdominal and back muscles in coordination, it is a core exercise. You can perform many of these exercises from the comfort of your home without weights. Some great examples of core exercises include planks, fitness ball exercises, or sit-ups.

Toned Abs
Core exercises are vital when it comes to defining abdominal muscles. It takes aerobic activity to burn abdominal fat, but core exercises will strengthen and tone the muscles underneath.

Makes Activities Easier
Having a strong core makes it easier to do activities like swinging a golf club or bending down to tie your shoe. Strong core muscles are important for athletes, for instance, runners. If a runner has a weak core, it can lead to fatigue, less endurance, and ultimately, injuries.

Help You Reach Goals

The Benefits Of Squats

Did you know that doing squats benefits more than just your legs? Many people are concerned that squatting will only give them big legs, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! Doing proper squats provides a full body workout, not just thicker thighs and toned legs. Check out these 5 major benefits to adding squats to your workout routine.

Full Body Workout
Glutes are the biggest muscle in the body, so targeting them through squats is important. However, it’s a common misconception is that squats only build thigh and calf muscles. The truth is that the exercise is an excellent workout for your core as well. Developing proper squat techniques will require as much work from your core muscles as your lower body.

Squats Increase Mobility in Hip and Ankle Joints
Some believe that squats are bad for the knees or create tension in the lower back. Ensuring that you use proper techniques while working out is essential to avoiding injury or unnecessary strain. An important aspect to keep in mind while performing your squats is to keep your back straight and to keep your lower back from contracting. This movement will force the bulk of the motion to be performed by your hips and ankles. The more reps you do with this technique, the more flexibility and mobility you will feel in your hips and ankles.

Excellent Fat Burning Exercise

Squats are a demanding and extensive work out on the body and burn a higher amount of calories than most traditional workouts due to the full body nature of the workout. Additionally, for every kilo of muscle mass that you accrue through squats, you burn an extra 20-30 extra calories per day! This causes a stacking effect on a yearly basis which will see your average calories burned skyrocket.

Creates An Anabolic Environment
Performing squats causes your body to release human growth hormone and testosterone, two chemicals vital to muscle growth. Doing squats and releasing these chemicals regularly in your workout cycle will result in faster gains overall.

Toning Your Lower Half

There’s no need for a Brazilian butt lift when you do squats. If you are looking for the ideal workout to tone your bottom and legs then look no further. There is no more effective workout for toning your gluteus maximus before beach season than doing squats.

How To Determine the Right Workout for You

Have you ever consistently stuck with a workout plan and felt like it just didn’t work for you? You hear all the hype about this routine or diet everyone is trying and get really pumped up to attempt it. Then it seems that months go by and you are seeing little to no progress. Most of us have been there and done that. Everybody is different and should be treated as such. Everyone’s “ideal body” is different and your goals should be tailored to what will make you happy at the end of each day. Unfortunately, when it comes to working out there isn’t just a one size fits all workout plan we can all stick to, but below are a few ways to help you figure out what’s best for you.

Make Sure You Enjoy It
You don’t have to be obsessed with your workout, but you should enjoy it. If you do something you enjoy, it’s easier to push past any resistance you may have on sticking with consistency. If you dread your workout or diet, then it is probably not the right program for you.

Is it Realistic?
Some of us have flexible schedules, while others may work 80+ hours a week, so our availability will be different. Make sure your time commitment is achievable and you aren’t wearing yourself thin chopping vegetables for thirty minutes every day followed by weightlifting for an hour and a half. Start your workout plan with a time that’s manageable for you, without hesitation. If this goes well, you can always add additional time in later.

Community
Some people like to join studios, while other prefer virtual communities. It is always nice to surround yourself with people who have the same goals and are motivated like you. There are hundreds of online forums you can join in on or consider joining a local studio in your area and attending class regularly. This will also help keep you motivated and hold you accountable.

Track Your Progress
Be sure to check and see how you are doing every few months. Are you able to complete your workouts at a quicker pace? Are you lifting heavier weights? Are you doing more reps? You can also measure yourself physically by weight or body measurements.

Finding the right workout plan will take hard work, but with dedication you will bring yourself closer to becoming the best version of you. Best Diet Foods for Long Term Weight Loss

Losing weight doesn’t have to mean deprivation. Yet, when you think diet, you most likely think HUNGER. We think the best way to make changes in your diet is for good, not short term. Most fad diets exist only in the short term and do not create sustainable changes that you can keep for the rest of your life. The only true way to lose weight and change your life is to commit to beneficial, healthy foods that make you feel good, energized, and fuel your workouts.

Here are some of our favorite foods for you to incorporate into your diets.

Arugula

Swap plain romaine lettuce, which is mostly water, for this nutrient-dense food. It’s a dark, leafy green full of antioxidants that helps block toxins that dampen your libido. So let’s have arugula salads for dinner, honey!

Asparagus

This is known as a detox food. It has high levels of amino acids, which help flush excess fluid out. As a powerhouse of vitamins that speeds up your metabolism, it contains Vitamins A, C, E, K, B6, folate, iron, copper and even houses protein.

Broth

Try to add more broth into your diet by soaking veggies or making soups. You can start with beef, chicken, miso, vegetable, seafood or bone broth.

Beets

These colorful taproots help fight cancer with their amazing power of antioxidants. They also contain iron, fiber, folate, potassium. Think of beets as a nice way to increase your salads’ nutrient power.

Coffee

Black coffee is best! It’s a great weight loss tool because it speeds metabolism and helps burn fat.

Zucchini

This is a great vegetable to fill you up with very few calories (20 per cup). You might even want to grow your own this spring.

Lemons

As a great detox aid that’s full of vitamin C, lemons can be eaten or added to your water and homemade dressings.

Pumpkin

Rich in potassium, pumpkins can help you curb your sweet tooth while adding a bunch of vitamins into your diet regularly.

Celery

Try trading out chips for celery when you’re dipping. Hummus and celery are a good combination, but none better than the traditional celery and peanut butter.

No matter which vegetables and fruits you choose – you’re sure to find your favorites that help boost your energy, metabolism and zest for life. Unlike other food categories, more is better when it comes to fruits and veggies, so don’t be afraid to pile on the good. Start with regular salads, add into omelets and dinners and before you know it, you’ll hit your recommended fruit and veggie dose daily. These lifestyle changes will produce long-lasting weight loss and results. Don’t forget to pair with exercise! We’ll see you at THE GYM!
